The publication of E. M. Cioran’s notebooks in English translation has been held up for years without explanation, and it is not clear whether the entire contents of the notebooks were to be published in any case. This project begins an independent translation, initially with a single amateur translator, but with plans to recruit others.
This translation is based on the 1997 Gallimard edition of Cioran: Cahiers 1957-1972.
Few of Cioran’s entries are dated. Otherwise, it might have been convenient to publish each entry as a post dated accordingly, as though Cioran had anachronistically entered them here himself. Rather, the translation will be broken into separate posts whenever Cioran specifies a date.
